Egypt: Global Greens urge immediate end of violence and restoration of democracy

The Global Greens utterly condemn the massacre perpetrated by the military against supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood in Cairo, Alexandria and other centres in Egypt on 14 August 2013.

The violent dissolution of the sit-ins in Al-Nahda Square and Raba’a al-Adawiyya demonstrates that the military forces in Egypt are not responding to the ongoing social and political crisis in Egypt in a democratic and peaceful manner.

We call on the military government to halt the violence immediately and for the perpetrators to be brought to justice in accordance with international law and human rights.

We call on all sides of Egyptian society to launch an urgent, inclusive and peaceful process to resolve the crisis and restore democracy.  Good governance must be established to address Egyptian's current and longterm social development needs.

We call on the UN Security Council and the international community to take strong measures to end the crisis, support the restoration of democracy and uphold human rights, including the right to protest peacefully. Military aid should be suspended until this has been established.

The massacre is a tragedy for Egypt, for those killed and injured, and for global society. The Global Greens mourn with the victims and their families.
