The Global Greens express their great sadness at the death of leading Congolese human rights activist Floribert Chebeya and strongly endorse the European Greens' call for an inquiry. We send our deep condolences and sympathy to Mr Chebeya's family and friends.

Mr Floribert Chebeya, a leading human rights defender in the Democratic Republic of Congo was killed in suspicious circumstances on Tuesday 1st or Wednesday 2nd June.

The Global Greens endorse the comments of European Greens Spokespersons Monica Frassoni and Philippe Lamberts.

“We were deeply shocked to hear of the assassination of Floribert Chebeya who, as director of the organisation “Voice of the Voiceless”, was one of Congo’s leading human rights activists. Mr Chebeya also had very good relationship with the Greens in Congo, particularly in Kinshasa, and cooperated with them on a range of issues.

We would like to support the demands of many human rights organisations, including Amnesty International, for a prompt, thorough and transparent investigation into this murder. This is particularly important as Floribert has been arrested and persecuted by the authorities on several occasions and recently complained of threats by the police. An investigation must be launched so that we can find out what exactly happened to Floribert after he left police headquarters in Kinshasa on Tuesday evening.

We again pay tribute to the courage shown by Floribert and our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues at this very difficult time.”
